when i saw the orchid jar display in front of kittichai restaurant when i met up with friends at thom bar (as they both share the entrance with thompson hotel), i knew i had to go there some day – if for no other reason than to check out the interior design. to kick off the 2012, my friends and i had dinner at kittichai.
for appetizers, we tried the carmelized pork belly, crab salad with thai herbs; banana blossom salad, grilled shrimp and roasted cashew nuts; thai spiced butternut squash soup; and stir fried mussels, chili, thai basi and crispy shallots. my fav was the pork and crab – i would go back for this appetizer!
for the main dishes, we tried the pan seared mahi mahi, rich red coconut curry; chili-smoked hanger steak, green beans and preserved chili jam; and duck two ways. the duck texture was great, the steak was a little too sweet but i loved the mahi mahi. yum!
while we were pretty full from the appetizers and main dishes, we tried two desserts, the flourless Valrhona chocolate cake with fresh cream and the coconut creme caramel with coconut tuille.
we also had great drinks – thai coffee and iced tea that you could customize taste with the amount of milk and sugar you want. they also customized their lychee cocktail to a nice non-alcoholic drink.
to save the best for last, the décor – oh, what a décor. orchids all around! from the jars filled with orchids in the entrance, beautiful orchids in the bathroom to orchids hanging from the ceiling in the dining room. in addition, the center of the dining room is one big pool of floating candles. then there a variety of draped walls in warm yellow, orange and brown tones. it was gorgeous.
