when i watched jeffrey introduce his steak sandwich with the steak and mayonaisse seasoned with harissa, i wanted jeffrey to win! harissa is a paste. jeffrey introduces it as ” … THE condiment of north african cuisine made from toasted brown cumin, coriander, caraway, dried chili, sun dried tomato and a little garlic.” it is ” …the ketchup of north africa.” you can buy harissa in supermarkets or order online. here’s a quick run down of the recipe from watching the webisode since the detailed ingredients are on the site yet. i can’t wait to try this sandwich!

i made this sandwich and it is OFF THE HOOK! there is nothing i would change from it: the tender grilled harissa-seasoned steak, the flavorful mayonaisse, the carmelized onions, the balance of the fresh veggies and the crunch from the grilled hero bread … OH MY … it was absolute perfection!
HARISSA STEAK SANDWICH WITH SUN-DRIED TOMATO MAYONAISSE
- Yellow tomato or any color tomato
- Hero bread cut in half horizontally
Sun Dried Tomato Mayonaisse
- Sun dried tomato
Spread harissa on steak, add salt and pepper, then grill on a hot grill.
Carmelize onions with oil and salt.
Heat oil, add garlic and mint. When you smell the garlic and hear the sizzle, add the sun dried tomato. Turn heat off and let the mix infuse. Add mix to mayonaisse. Add more harissa to bump up the heat (if desired).
Grill bread, slather on mayonaisse on both sides of the hero bread. Layer steak, onion, arugula and yellow tomato on one bottom side of bread. Close with top side of hero bread.
Cut in half and take a BIG bite!
*** TIPS ***
- Mint is an incredible foil to the heat.
- Slice steak on the bias, against the grain, to make it nice and tender.
