inject me with some starbucks

now, i couldn’t wrap up my first trip in seattle without talking about one of its lifelines. beginning in their first place in pike place market, seattle is the home of starbucks coffee.

while i knew the origin of the starbucks chain was in seattle, i didn’t think about visiting until someone mentioned that first store was in pike place market. obviously i wasn’t the only one with the same idea to visit the flagship store and they were prepared for it. articles and pictures of original store in frames and proudly on display. they also shake it up with barista flair, throwing around and catching cup orders and bags of beans to be grounded. the store was packed with visitors taking pictures, ordering a cup of coffee and picking up some memorabilia with “starbucks pike place. home of the first” on it. i admit bought into hype and picked up my own bearista and a pike place mug for myself. i also bought a bag of pike place beans and a cup/saucer set as a gift.

like most people, i need my regular dosage of coffee but my biggest weakness for coffee though is its smell – so fragrant and alluring. i only allow myself a maximum of 1 cup per day but this would be hard to follow if i lived in seattle. in some neighborhoods there is a starbucks or another coffee shop on every block so the fragrance is always calling out to you to have  … just another cup.

fresh and flavorful green leaf

on our way to the airport, cola man takes to the international district for our last meal in seattle to one of his favorite places, green leaf vietnamese restaurant. apart from the garish decorations, are the beautiful seats that are large and comfy as well as crafted with wheels as arm rests and table stands. they are quite beautiful and i wish i could take them home!

the menu has typical vietnamese dishes as well as some unique twists. since we were going to be getting on a plane for a few hours, i wanted something familiar and comforting so i got the curry chicken specialty noodle soup. my bowl was empty at the end of the meal. yum.

chewy mint brownies

while hangin’ with cola man, m & i saw one of his ultimate league games. it was the first time i saw a game and it was a lot of fun. a sport with lots of skill, strategy and wind power … and fun!

part of the fun of being in being in the league aside from the comradery, exercise and creativity – from chants to theme games, they find ways to keep it lively. so what does any of this have to do with food? well, at the end of the game, both teams dedicate a cheer to the other. cnc’s team came up with a fun-spolsion – which was true to its name. on the other hand, the opposing  team gave cnc’s team … brownies!

cnc shared his brownie with us and OMG, it was sooooooooooooooooo good that i had to get the recipe. so, here it is!

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup Dutch-processed cocoa
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons instant espresso powder
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons boiling water
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon mint extract
  • 2-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1-3/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon table salt

Preparation

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 9X13 (metal, rather than glass) with nonstick cooking spray. Note – if you double this recipe, it fits great in a half sheet pan.

Whisk cocoa, espresso powder, and boiling water together in large bowl until smooth. Add unsweetened chocolate and whisk until chocolate is melted. Whisk in melted butter and oil. (Mixture may look curdled.) Add eggs, yolks, and mint and continue to whisk until smooth and homogeneous. Whisk in sugar until fully incorporated. Add flour and salt and mix with rubber spatula until combined.

Scrape batter into prepared pan and bake until toothpick inserted halfway between edge and center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached, 30 to 35 minutes. Transfer pan to wire rack and cool 1½ hours.

holly cow, molly moon’s

while walking around downtown seattle, i had a hankering for ice cream but i could not find a parlor anywhere! so, aside from a ice cream shake at johnny rockets or milk shakes at mcdonalds, there was no ice cream! do people in seattle eat ice cream???

so, i asked cola man what was the deal and where is the ice cream? and that’s how i learned about molly moon’s homemade ice cream, a cute parlor in freemont. now, the first day cola man drove by there, it was a weekend night and it was late but there was a line out the door. apparently it is a frequent occurrence – lines out the door for a scoop of ice cream. now that’s my kind of city! so we tried another day and we were successful! i had the ginger ice cream. it was creamy and gingery with little bits of crystalized ginger. yum!

now if you really wanted to know, the place is named after the owner, molly moon and the dog on the logo is her dog, parker posey. the names are just made for a bio for an ice cream parlor! you can also find the Molly Moon mobile driving around in the city for your ice cream needs.

your majesty, the kingfish café

cnc took us the kingfish café for dinner after work. i had been craving southern food and this place did the trick!

we enjoyed the hush puppies, fried green tomatoes and cold shrimp with salsa appetizers. then had awesome ribs and baked sweet potato for my mail meal. everything was finger-licking good!

i wish i had more room in my stomach because we saw a strawberry shortcake piled high being served at a table near us. too bad. we’ll have to go back for another meal with a bigger appetite!

right

pike place chowder – no, we ain’t in new england

when searching for good food in a new town, it’s ok to trust a place that says it is “award winning” – especially when it comes to food. at least in this case. while i was browsing the many malls in downtown seattle, i saw this little joint that proudly promotes its award winning chowder. it intrigued me so i dragged m to try it.

with several of its chowders listed as award winning, we decided to go for the chowder sampler where we got to try four 5-ounce cups of chowder. so we chose:

  • new england chowder
  • seafood bisque
  • chicken & corn chowder
  • scallop chowder

well, they don’t call it award winning for nothing! i liked all of them! they are rich, creamy and full of seafood. if you make it out to seattle, do get yourself a bowl … or four!

swim to salty’s

m & i went out to dinner with coworkers. they picked the restaurant but i had seen the place on the tourist map and it had piqued my interest. salty’s with a little crab on the logo. surely the seafood must be good? the answer is yes!

salty’s is in west seattle so the best way to get there from downtown seattle is by water taxi, a cute boat that comes once an hour and you can only pay with exact change. a 20-minute ride with a view of the seattle skyline. the night was starting off well! we had a very cheerful waiter who had great memory for someone taking orders for a table of 10 without writing anything down.

after deliberating on the choices from the robust menu, i decided on ciopino crab prepared with a tomato broth and vegetables. it looked and tasted amazing. i never had ciopino crab before but it was meaty and tender. delicious! i wish i had room for dessert but all i could do was marvel at the pretty desserts i saw on the way in. this restaurant is right by the water so you have a beautiful view, especially when you arrive around sunset. you’ll be captivated and satiated. what a great way to end the day.

rocky mountain chocolate factory

sadly i am allergic but i can still appreciate good looking food, especially when it comes to sweets! so here’s a triple threat: chocolate, candy and fruit on presentation as a piece of art: candied apples. yum!

but this place isn’t just candied apples – it’s crazy chocolates, ice cream, caramel popcorn, nut brittle and so much more … like … wedding favors!

chocolate on glassware, champagne bottles, fruit, pretzel. you name it! love it!

get down at rock salt

our first dinner in seattle, we didn’t want to eat at a chain restaurant that we could find at home so we asked our friend in seattle, cola man, where we should go and he recommended rock salt, a place specializing in steaks and seafood, and has a water view.

i could have just ordered the appetizer and ended there because it was huge and it was awesome! the cajun prawns were nice flavored and the crazy crunchy garlic baguette was the perfect spoon to pick up every last drop of the sauce. it was divine! needless to say, i didn’t have much room for the linguini and clam sauce but i did have a bite. it was amazing! the noodles were so tender and the perfect consistency as well as flavoring. i was sad i didn’t have enough room in my tummy to eat it all!

this restaurant turns into a dance club after 9pm. since we had a late meal, we saw them prep for it and by the time we left, there were bouncers at the door. thanx cola man for recommending the place – it was delish!

heavenly teavana

since they were everywhere, i walked around the many malls in downtown seattle to check out stores unique to seattle and those i haven’t been to before. that’s how i found teavana. outside and inside the tea shop are complimentary tea tasting stations with teavana’s tea concoctions.

i tried their jasmine dragon/phoenix pearls and the samurai chai mate/white ayurvedic chai. they were both really good – they sure know how to mix their teas to create new flavors! there were also other tea flavors in teapots to try, including the rare silver needle white tea as well as a unique peach momotaro tea. the later tea in its dry form is a ball but it blossoms into a flower when brewed. it was fun trying all the different flavors of tea!as well as make tea beautiful. in addition to tea, they sell rock sugar, tea making tools as well as tea cans, pots and cups.

not only does teavana sell and serve wonderful tea, they also give back to the community. working to improve the lives of those who live in tea producing areas of the world, teavana partners with CARE and annually donates 1% of all profits from teas sold to CARE. the money is used to improve education, create access to safe water and offer greater economic opportunities. all teavana teas are part of this equatrade program.
