hk: kee wah bakery

we arrive early to the airport to leave hong kong so we took turns to walk around the airport. a popular shop that many people went into and were purchasing mass quantities was at kee wah bakery. since i love bread and baked goods, i went in to see what the excitement was about – and what excitement it was!

from cookies and biscuits – to – breads and shortcake – to – rice cakes and moon cakes … there were so many to choose from! they were also nicely packaged, perfect for buying for friends as gifts, as it looked like many customers were! so i joined them and bought some goodies for my relatives. but i was also intrigued by these cookies at the store – they were flavored by teas: black tea, green tea, jasmine tea and oolong tea. i was curious if they would have distinct flavors so i got one of each to try. then i had my family try one of each and guess which flavor they ate. the best score was 50% but each got different tea flavors right. even though we couldn’t tell, it was still fun and good cookies!

kee wah bakery is in various places in hong kong, as well as worldwide. unfortunately there are no locations in new york but the next time i go to hong kong, i’ll be sure to stop there!

hk: das gute

hong kong is a walking city and since it is still early september, it was quite hot out. so it is important to make many stops to sit, rest and hydrate.

one place we stopped at was Das Gute in the food level of the SOGO department store. known for its cake and bakery, Das Gute also has a variety of gelato flavors that i couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try!

so, i got 5 flavors: green tea, mango, sesame, mint chocolate chip and pomelo. they were all so good! my family and i enjoyed trying each flavor and each had our favorites. mine was pomelo, a new fruit flavor i had quite a few times this trip, but honestly, they were all so good!

hk: pho yummee at the peak

one of the places you MUST visit, especially on your first trip to hong kong is to check out the view at The Peak. there is a tram that takes you to The Peak and it is a long wait but you will see a view of hong kong like no other. it is breathtaking.

so after you make it to the top to see the amazing view of the city, how about a meal? now, there are beautiful restaurants at the peak with a view of the city but it is quite pricey. so we paid more to go to the Sky Terrace for an amazing view of the city and then found a simpler and cheaper place to eat.

there were many restaurants at The Peak as well as The Peak Galleria. after meal after meal of cantonese food (there was a Tsui Wah we could have gone to), we opted to shake it up and go to a vietnamese place called Pho Yummee – and it was yummy! we tried:
- summer roll with shrimp
- goi xoai xanh: green mango, cucumber and shrimp salad
- pho bo: pho noodles with sliced flank steak in fragrant beef broth
- bahn mi thit: classic vietnamese sub with liver pate, sausage and chicken

they also had an variety of drinks and we tried two:
- the mekong: tangerine, pomelo, pineapple and aloe vera
- viet smooth: mango guava, pineapple, sugarcane and fresh milk

even though it wasn’t cantonese food and we weren’t in vietnam, it was a really great meal. we fueled up and were ready to get back on the tram to head back to our hotel for a good night’s rest!

hk: the sweet dynasty

one of the most gourmet meals we had in hong kong was at another restaurant my niece recommended: the sweet dynasty – and oh how sweet it was!

for the main dishes we had pork congee, noodles with wontons in soup, fried noodles with seafood, deep fried spare ribs with strawberry sauce and fried squid with celery in XO sauce. a notable mentions – my dad said the congee was the best he has ever had. as as for my favorite part of the meal: dessert. the sweet dynasty, as in its name, is known for its tofu pudding and they serve it on its own as well as with fruits, tapioca and nuts to make it ever more decadent and enjoyable – not just in taste but presentation. the tofu pudding is served in an ice bath brought to you with cool steam floating about. awesome! we had the chilled tofu pudding with fresh mango & pearl tapioca, chilled sago soup with pomelo & mango, and tofu pudding with tapioca & lily bulb.

this elaborate feast did come with a price but we relished in every flavor – both savory and sweet. it truly was a meal not to be forgotten and i have started saving for another try to hong kong to have their dessert again!

hk: ming garden

if you think cantonese food, there’s a MUST and that is dim sum! so my niece, who knows her food in hong kong recommended ming garden so we went. yum!

we had all of the staples:
- spring rolls
- shrimp dumplings
- vegetable dish
- turnip cakes
- tofu roll in soup
- shiu mai
- steamed rice rolls with shrimp
- steamed roast pork bun

everything was so good! while it is nice to have dim sum in hong kong, it is not very different from the good dim sum i have had in new york so it’s nice to know that i can get almost authentic dim sum at home!

hk: tsui wah

upon arriving in hong kong, my family and i were hungry! after we checked into the hotel and dropped off our stuff, we asked the front desk where we can get a bite to eat and they recommended a restaurant a few blocks away: Tsui Wah.

the menu is pretty extensive as if to make sure there’s something for everyone. we did our best to try a little of everything! some of the dishes we tried were:
- kagoshima pork cartilage with vermicelli in fish soup
- king prawns in XO sauce with tossed noodles
- shrimp & spinach dumplings with noodles in fish soup
- spicy chicken with vermicelli in fish soup
- king prawns with vermicelli in tom yum kung
- crispy bun served with sweet condensed milk

we also had some of the drinks and they were so refreshing:
- iced green lemon with mint
- tangerine with lemon honey
- red bean milk
- red bean milk with ice cream

as we explored hong kong the next few days, we saw several tsui wah restaurants all over hong kong. we enjoyed it so much, we went twice! tsui wah, is definitely a safe bet if you don’t know the restaurants around you and want to get a good meal.
