burger & barrel

since m love burgers and i love trying new places, m picked tried place for us to go: B&B – if you can’t tell what they are known for it’s Burger and Barrel. cool.

their burger patties are from new york’s Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors, which already tells you it’s going to be a good quality burger! i got the B & B classic: lettuce, tomato, pickles, american cheese with a special sauce. m got the bash style: caramelized onion & bacon jam, pickles and cheese. all burgers are served with fries but you can swap with other alternatives. we got tater tots and sweet potato fries instead of french fries. all i can say is YUM! YUM! YUM!

b&b is also know for its wine. “Wine is a Food” is scrawled on the wall and they have quite a selection. it is clear that many customers come here to enjoy wine, some just to have a drink with a friend at the bar or table .. others enjoy it with a plate of cheese and fruit. since i lack knowledge of wine to share, i can share my appreciation of how b&b decorated the restaurant with wine bottles. from bottles on the mantle to all around the bar – to – above the glass entrance doors – to – above the windows. wine glass bottles and its shape are such beautiful decoration! all in all, b&b is 2 thumbs up!

place your order at the counter

m had a bad experience with a peanut butter milkshake last year so when i read about the peanut butter and chocolate shake from justdesertnyc, i decided to take m there.

other than shakes, The Counter is a burger place. all burgers are 100% natural angus, hormone and antibiotic free, and humanely raised and handled. it specializes in allowing you to create your own burger in 5 simple steps.

  1. choose a patty
  2. choose a cheese
  3. choose 4 toppings
  4. choose a sauce
  5. choose a bun

if you don’t want to do the work, you can also choose burgers that has been pre-designed. if you don’t want the bun, you can also have burgers in a bowl with salad. they also have great shoe string french fries as well as yummy sweet potato fries.

now, creating your own burger may not be what it’s cracked up to be – we may think that adding all our favorite things together would taste awesome but it really may not. after all, there is a reason we rely on tried and true combinations. so, give it a whirl to make your own or give The Counter’s signature burgers a try. either way, enjoy!

christmas dinner 2010

m made burgers for christmas dinner this year – shaping each patty with tj’s organic grass-fed ground beef 85/15 and frying them in bacon fat. so everyone can customize their own burger, there was an elaborate spread of toppings and sauces:

cheeses:
- american, gorgonzola, mozzarella, muenster and pepperjack

veggies:
- avocado, bacon, chili, jalapeno, cremini mushrooms, green peppers, onions and tomatoes

sauces:
- barbeque sauce, ketchup, dijon and wasabi mustard

so i made my burger topped with american cheese, avocado, lettuce, onion and barbeque sauce. there were also sides of roasted potatoes and new pickles – it was burger-tastic meal!

originally i was going to have a chili burger with m’s vegetarian chili but it tastes so good on its own that i had a separate bowl with avocado.

what a fun meal for the holidays!

satay sliders

i have been a eating out a lot this month, mainly because there has been quite a flurry of activities! while eating out is fun and i was able to control what i eat – not going crazy in proportion or decadence – still, after a while you miss a nice home cooked meal. yes, i missed cooking!

anyhoo, now that things have slowed down, i found a saved recipe that i looking forward to making. i saw rachael ray make this on her daytime tv show a while ago: satay mini burgers! thai flavors within a bun – sounds good right? well, it was GREAT!

the first thing that you taste when you bite into the satay slider is the amazing flavor of the patty – especially the ginger. not in a scary spicy way but in a flavorful, welcoming way. then there’s the crunch of the cucumber relish on top  and the cabbage on the bottom. all of this covered with the soft, chewy potato bread … no need for condiments for this burger. it is soooooooooo YUM! YUM! YUM!

Ingredients

  • cucumber relish
  • 1 pound ground chicken or pork
  • 2 tablespoons tamari sauce + 1 tablespoon of water or
3 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup all natural no sugar added peanut butter, softened in microwave 20 seconds on high
  • 6 large cloves garlic, finely chopped or grated
  • 1-inch ginger root, peeled and finely chopped or grated
  • A handful of chives, finely chopped
  • Black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 8 slider buns, such as potato or brioche rolls, split horizontally
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage

Preparation

Prepare cucumber relish. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat with the tamari, peanut butter, garlic, ginger, chives and black pepper. Form an even mound of meat, score it into 4 equal portions and from each portion form 2 patties, about 3 inches in diameter each – total 8 patties.

Heat vegetable oil in a cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high to high heat. Add the patties and cook 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden and firm.

To serve, place a little shredded cabbage on the bun bottoms, top with the patties, some cucumber relish and the bun tops.

music and burgers at pop burger

i heard about this place because a dj i heard at an event a few months ago spins at pop burger’s wednesday night “after work party.” i’m always up for trying a new burger place so m & i went there for a bite. we went to the 58th street east side location. the exterior is funky and fun.

if you buy food at the counter on the lower floor, prices are cheaper than if you buy at the lounge upstairs, where the menu is different and costs more but you get the comfy seats and the ambiance.

we opted to eat downstairs where the walls are decorated with posters of cambell soup cans. we had the 2 mini cheese pop burgers, french fries, pop corn (on the cob) and a chocolate milk shake. all i can say is – yum!

the fries are deep fried to perfection and stayed crispy throughout the meal, the burgers, altho mini, were fat with lots of trimmings which made them stack high and added to the experience of biting into a big burger without short-changing on flavor or tenderness. the corn-on-the-cob was grilled and flavored well. the shake was nice, thick and very chocolaty.

over all, it was a great treat when being baaad.

veggies via boca burger

there are some people who just gotta have a burger – so much so, that if they can’t have a beef burger, they’ll have a turkey burger, tuna burger or even veggie burger. i’m not one of these people – if i don’t have a beef burger, no biggie – i’d find something else to order!

m is one of those who would choose a substitution just to have a burger. after reading many positive reviews about it, we tried the boca burger for the first time. m paired the grilled vegetable boca burger with american cheese, tomatoes, onions and barbecue sauce – all of the above – layered in between a lightly toasted soft wheat bun.

it was pretty good! it was moist, had a neutral flavor and was a substantial meal – leaving you feeling full and satisfied. since we can’t have a beef burger every day so give boca’s veggie burgers a try! you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

morton’s bar bites

if you’re in the mood for a inexpensive good burger, who says you can’t go to a steakhouse? morton’s of chicago shows us how – some with a separate bar (bar 12.21) and others with their bar bites menu, which consists of mini cheeseburgers, steak sandwiches, crab cakes, chicken strips, fries and seafood.

m & i went to a morton’s bar 12.21 and they had both a small bar bite menu as well as a big bar bite menu. the big bar bite menu had two additional items: a steak or a big prime burger. you get to choose the cheese and a topping (bacon, mushroom or onion). i like mine with cheddar and mushrooms. YUM! m got the three prime cheeseburgers and they were pretty good too. next time we go, i want to try their four petit filet mignon sandwiches! at the bar 12.21 location we went to, they have a special between 4:30 – 6:30 and after 9pm — their small bar bites menu is only $6! what a steal!

but whether you go for their bar bites menu or their regular menu, you got to end the meal with their famous morton’s legendary hot chocolate cake! you may want to order it in advance because it takes 35 minutes to make. but even if you have to wait, like we did, it is oh so worth it! soft warm chocolate cake with a little crunchy exterior … molten chocolate oozing out from the middle … top it with the french vanilla ice cream … baby, it is lip-smacking good!

inside out turkey-li-cious burger

since we can’t have a beef burger a day, shake it up with a turkey burger … with the works!

Ingredients

  • 5 slices turkey bacon, chopped
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons smoked chipotle powder
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, for dredging
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large sweet onion, sliced quarter-inch thick and pulled apart into rings
  • 1-1/2 to 2 pounds ground turkey
  • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard
  • 1/4 cup aged sharp cheddar cheese, shredded ~ or use american cheese
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 head iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • 2 to 3 beefsteak tomatoes, sliced
  • 5 to 6 new pickles, chopped

Preparation

Preheat your oven to 425 degree F and heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.

In the skillet, cook the bacon until crisp, 4-5 minutes, then set aside to drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Reserve the fat rendered from the bacon in the skillet to cook the burgers in.

While the bacon is crisping, combine the cornmeal and chipotle powder in a bowl with high sides. Set up two more small bowls with high sides, filling one with the flour and other with the buttermilk. Dip the onion rings first in the buttermilk, then dredge them in the flour, tossing them lightly in your hands to remove any excess. Dip them once again in the buttermilk, and finally coat them completely with the cornmeal mixture. Place the dredged rings on a cookie sheet and bake until crispy, about 20 minutes.

While the onion rings are baking, place the ground turkey in a large mixing bowl. Season it with salt and pepper, and add the mustard. Work the meat with your hands to incorporate the seasoning. Divide the meat into 4 equal parts and form patties out of each portion, making a well in the center of each one. Fill the well of each burger with some of the crisped bacon and 1 tablespoon grated cheese. Then carefully form the burger around the cheese and bacon filling, making sure the fillings are completely covered with the meat.

When all the patties are done, drizzle the EVOO into the skillet the bacon was cooked in, and place each burger into the pan. Cook 2 minutes on each side, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook burgers 7-8 minutes longer, turning occasionally. Do not press down on the burgers as they cook.

Serve each burger on a bed of lettuce and tomato. Top each burger with pickles and a few crispy onion rings.

burgers, as american as baseball

we had the awesom-est experience to sit up close and personal to watch the mets take on the sf giants. m’s childhood friend hooked us up with VIP seating to the game at the new citifield. gee, i dunno if i can ever go back! we sat just right of home plate. the next batter always stopped in front of us and practiced his swings. we could see the mets dugout to our right and often famous people sit on the left. we saw the cast of mad men. it was a crazy view!

on top of which, we were spoiled. there were menus at our seats and someone comes around on a regular basis to take orders. when the food is ready, someone comes and brings it to you. service! since it was our first time in the VIP section, we didn’t know we had seat service so we got to explore the new stadium. but i didn’t need to explore to know what i wanted to eat. shake shack, baby!

burgers … fries … frozen custard shakes. YUM!

shake shack is also located in other locations in the city. in it’s first location in madison square park since 2004, lines get pretty crazy! there are actually cameras, “shake cams,” installed around the park and you can go online to their site to see the length of the line. pretty high tech, eh?

well, when you gotta get a burger … you just gotta get a burger! — and don’t forget ‘em shakes!
