sprinkle your cupcakes with joy

there’s was a lot of buzz going on when sprinkles opened in nyc in may and it has not died down. i finally went when i was walking by the neighborhood and i will be back! looking like sprinkles falling from the sky, the cute store on the upper east side is designed with catchy bold dots of colors inside and out. it just looks fun and inviting – as it should be – you’re gonna have some cupcakes!

when you enter, you are welcome to a display with three rows of cupcakes – which flavor to choose! for my first cupcake, i had the black and white.cupcake – belgian dark chocolate cake with creamy vanilla frosting and chocolate sprinkles. the medium-sized chocolate is so moist and delicious. the frosting on top was a bit too sweet, as most frosting are for me. what would make me go back again is to try the flavors they have, like ginger lemon, key lime and chai latte. … hmmm. if you’ve been there before, you know that flavors change daily, even seasonally, so if you have a flavor in mind, you will need to plan in advance by checking their site or their iPhone app.

sprinkles cupcakes is founded by candace nelson, whose great grandmother was renowned for distinctive desserts. at sprinkles cupcakes, they use dairy and produce from local farms where available.  in addition to tasty desserts, their bakery boxes, plates, napkins, shopping bags and giftboxes are made from recycled materials. other efforts include the use of green cleaning products and programs to maximize waste recycling and minimize water usage. happiness and responsibility in a cupcake. sweet.

charm city cakes + harry potter = explosive cakes

it has been a beautiful cake relationship between charm city cakes and harry potter. now that the last movie is coming out, the team pulled out all the stops for perhaps the last cake for the franchise.

*

this week, Charm City Cakes
recreated a half-destroyed Hogwarts castle cake for
the New York premiere of ”Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″

“It’s got over 120 LED lights on it that are all on different circuits so they’re blinking at different moments, so it looks like it’s on fire, and then it’s got smoke machines that go through it, so smoke is billowing out of the towers,” says Duff. Rupert Grint cut the first slice at the premiere after party.

this is the second Hogwarts Castle cake by charm city cakes team baked for harry potter and they also made a cake of Hogwarts Express. i remember bcuz i saw them on Ace of Cakes!

*

in late 2007,  Charm City Cakes built
the Hogwarts castle with surrounding lake cake for
the Los Angeles premiere of ”Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”
(shown in Ace of Cakes: season 4, episode 1)

Duff, Anna, and Ben travel to Hollywood for the Los Angeles premiere. in LA, they complete the construction of massively scaled edible replica of Hogwarts castle as seen in the film. the cake was on display at the official Warner Bros. premiere party, and featured appearance from Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.

amorino is blooming with flavor

i had been looking forward to going to amorino since i read grub street’s article about free gelato during its opening day happy hour. but what caught my eye wasn’t the free – it was the beauty of the flower shaped scoops. not only did i want to get one, i wanted to see the artistry in the service – and what a lovely presentation it was.

you may think that creating an art form for an ice cream cone, would take too much time but the servers are pros. first, place your order of size. when its’s your turn, you tell them the flavors you want and they build a chrysanthemum right before your eyes. your flower cone can bloom with up to 22 flavors using the paddle-like serving spoon. however, they recommend maximum of four or five so you can taste the flavors. unfortunately, this art form is only presented if you order a cone so if you get your ice cream in a cup, it shows you’re just in it for the gelato – which is just as good (btw, there’s also chocolates, drinks and waffles). in a coffee/chocolate mood: i got a piccolo sugar cone with caffe puro brasile, niccola T.e G. trilobata, tiramisu, spekuloos and l’inimitabile. all gone!

i didn’t make it out opening day but over a week later, other customers and i didn’t mind having to shell out the cash as well as waiting on the line that kept growing to enjoy the cool, sweet and beautiful treat.

breakfast and art for allie by jim’s pancakes

how can a 3-year old not have a great meal when presented with a beautiful art creation that is a feast for the eyes … and then get to eat it too? well, little allison has just that responsibility and she does it with a smile, much to the joy of her father, jim.

for the rest of us who don’t live in the household, we’re lucky to find his blog, jim’s pancakes. here, jim shares his artistic pancake creations. he even gives some construction tips so we can recreate his art.

just to name a few from his gallery:
- accessories (ties, phones, jewelry)
- animals (lions, octopuses, turtles)
- architecture (ferris wheels, bridges, cranes)
- food plates (eggs & bacon, hamburger & fries, spaghetti & meatball)
- games (golf, pacman, tic-tac-toe)
- interactive activities (“toasting” s’mores over a flame, flying an airplane)

but that’s not all jim shares, he provides recipes for his pancakes! as he states, he modifies his recipe to “find different combinations that work best for pancake art.” to get his recipes, you provide an email and you’ll receive weekly newsletters of his recipes.

yes, we can see them and eat them too, just like allie!

carton king creativity park, restaurant and honey museum

in central taiwan, a park was opened three years ago to rejuvenate a declining paper packaging company and to remind us of the value of paper … not only to its beauty, but also to its uses and reuses.

the park consists of three sections: a theme park, a restaurant and a museum.

the 5,200 square-meter theme park has about 500 structures including the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower and Dutch windmills.

the restaurant is furnished with paper chairs and tables. it also uses paper furnishings, including paper utensils! how cool is that?

the honey museum shows the busy lives of bees.

carton king creativity park has about a third of its team designing and developing new products. a mixture of seasoned designers and new graduates, they come up with 40-50 new designs for customers each year.

it is so exciting to see how innovation can push us a step further to find ways to be environmentally-friendly. this place is definitely on my list of places to see when i visit taiwan again!

gingerbread cookies

in yesterday’s throwdown with bobby flay, johanna rosson, a gingerbread artist from macomb, IL decorated the house of abraham lincoln. it was pretty amazing, from the details in the glass windows to a snowball fight in front of the house! bobby attempted to build the empire state building. needless to say, johanna won the gingerbread decorating aspect of this throwdown hands down.

bobby won in terms of the taste of the gingerbread cookies. so here are both recipes. i’m going to have to try it out to see if they can possibly be any better than my gf’s gingerbread recipe, which is pretty amazing!

BOBBY’s GINGERBREAD COOKIES RECIPE

Bobby’s Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened slightly
  • 3/4 cup dark muscavado sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Preparation

Whisk the dry ingredients except the sugar. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle, cream the butter with the sugar until slightly fluffy. Slowly beat in the milk.

On low speed, beat in the dry mixture until combined; dough will be sticky. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions, roll each to 1/4 to 1/8-inch thick between sheets of parchment paper, and freeze until firm, about 20 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Line sheet pans with parchment paper.

Put the cookie dough on a floured work surface; cut and transfer cookies to the prepared sheets. Reroll and cut the scraps into cookies.

Bake the thinner cookies for about 11 minutes, until crisp, and the thicker about 20 minutes. Cool for about 2 minutes, then transfer to a rack to finish cooling.

taiwanese street markets – pt.1: seafood

during my stay in tw, my solution to adjusting to the 12-hour time difference was to sleep around midnight and get up at dawn. it wasn’t really a solution but it kinda worked for me. so, what did i do so early in the morning? i watched/listened to asian mtv; i diligently ate breakfast; then i headed out to the street markets. street markets in tw are like farmers markets in the u.s. but instead of just selling farm products, they sell EVERYTHING. now, what could i mean by everything? well, let me start with: seafood.

yup, you aren’t seeing wrong. they are live. shrimp, squid, crab, oysters … they’re all out there! in the states, there would be citations of all kinds of health violations but in tw, it is quite a common practice and according to my mom, they are fresher than fresh!

but not to worry if that’s not for you. there are  huge bins of pre-cooked meals, like seasoned shrimp. there are various choices of seafood products like fish balls, processed fish loaves (kamaboko), imitation crab sticks that you can add to soups and other dishes. but if you want to eat while you stroll down the various streets of the market, you can also buy japanese sushi or maki rolls in ready to eat packages.

anyhoo, there is lots of seafood to be seen and eaten in the street markets.

hey, when in tw, do what the tw-ese do!

on a side note, check out this creative outdoor display. can you tell what they are? yes, they are oyster shells!

ace of book-signing

this is my month of the duff.

i knew the Ace of Cakes book was coming out on tuesday, october 20. a few days ago, i checked in the barnes & nobles by my house and reserved a copy so i can pick it up the day it came out. i was content. the night before, i browsed on the charm city cakes website events page at midnight before the book launched and saw … duff goldman will be in new york for a book-signing on the day his book comes out in a barnes and nobles in long island at 7:30pm.

now, i had no plans of seeing duff any time soon — after all i had my fill when he led his Ace of Kids event earlier this month — but he was HERE … in my state! how could i pass it up??? so after m got out of work, we drove out to the island for book signing ambitions. as it turned out so did many many others.

book-signing began at 7:30pm and we were a half an hour late due to traffic. now, you wouldn’t think that would make much of a difference but in that half an hour not only did duff start and finish his discussion segment, the number distribution (which began at 5:00pm and was numbered from 1 – 500) as well as all the books in the bookstore were all gone!

but barnes & nobles knew their devoted fans. they sent their employees out to other b&n bookstores to pick up any available copies of duff’s book to bring back to the store to the happiness of all of those-who-had-no-numbers. we waited behind all of they-who-had-numbers in the hopes that duff would stay late and sign our book … he did!

with luck, i was able to pick up 3 books: one for me, one for my niece who i was meeting up with in a few days, and one for my gf and her daughter who i dragged to the Ace of Kids event. i was also able to sneak in a photo i took of duff with my gf and her daughter from the Ace of Kids event for him to sign and he did!

it has been a decorated month and i am cake-filled! the only thing that would have been able to up this event is the book-signing party at baltimore’s bookstore, Atomic Books where duff and the team of charm city cakes were going to be on hand to sign books. unfortunately, i am going to be out of the country … otherwise … you could have guessed where i would have been!
