take a ride on the kimchi taco truck

after catching a movie at union square, a few of us walked to the kimchi taco truck that was parked on astor place. since it was our first time trying it out, we went for the 3-tacos combo for a mere $7 that are topped with asian pico de gallo, fresh kimchi, green onion on toasted corn tortilla:

  • Grilled Korean BBQ Beef – Kimchi Taco’s Signature Marinade
  • Seared Pork – Korean Spiced Pork Tenderloin marinated with Red Pepper Paste
  • Pulled Chicken – Slow Cooked Shredded Chicken lightly sautéed with Red Wine Soy Sauce Reduction

in addition, we got 2 sides with healthy portions for just $3 – $4:

  • Spicy Rice Cakes - Grilled  Rice Cake dipped in Korean Red Pepper Glaze and topped with Queso Blanco and Green Onions
  • BBQ Nachos – Korean Marinated BBQ Beef & Spicy Pork with Kimchi, Queso Blanco, Pico de Gallo, Green Onion and Chip

i love authentic korean food but it was fun to try it with different flavor. between the three of us, we each had a taco – i had the pork. the flavor was nice and the kimchi was a nice touch. personally, i’m not a big fan of corn tortilla bcuz it is a bit crumbly so if i had to change it, i would have it with flour tortilla. the rice cakes were different with the addition of cheese. my favorite was the BBQ nachos – the flavors just mixed so well together!

since the flavors probably are meant to appeal to the masses, the kimchi and sauces aren’t anywhere near as the spicy as i love from authentic korean food but i still enjoyed their creative mixture. i look forward to trying the kimchi bowl and kim-cheeseseak so i’ll be on the lookout for the kimchi taco truck!

van leeuwen artisinal ice cream

the first time i saw the Van Leeuwen ice cream truck over a year ago in soho after dinner with friends. it caught my eye bcuz it had an earl grey flavored ice cream – my favorite tea. since we just finished a huge meal, i couldn’t fit any more food so we had to walk by without a taste. since then, i have seen the pale yellow truck several times in the city but always at similar inopportune moments. today the streak ended.

after the fun outdoor concert and a yummy late dinner, k tempted me with gourmet ice cream across the street. she made it sound so good that i couldn’t say no. what did i see when we exited the restaurant? the van leeuwen artisinal ice cream truck! i didn’t need to look at the choices – i knew exactly which flavor i would try! i am so glad i didn’t overeat during dinner bcuz i finally got to taste the earl grey ice cream! it was so creamy good!

van leeuwen artisinal ice cream uses fresh hormone free milk and cream from new york farmers to create ice cream that tastes home made. the family run business also cares about the environment, using disposable goods made from 100% renewable resources. they also pledge 1% of their profits to a grassroot organization whose goal is to preserve the mountain gorilla, an endangered species.

good ice cream + good people = a great combination.

rolling with the wafels & dinges

i have been looking forward to trying belgian waffles from Wafels & Dinges for a LONG TIME but each time i bumped into the cart, i had been too full to enjoy it. when i went looking for it once, it left its scheduled location early! i got so mad, i refused to follow it anymore. it just wasn’t meant to be … until now! i was taking my relatives around the city and in the middle of museum hopping, what do we find? the waffle truck and an empty stomach! so my niece, who has heard about my failed quests, treats me to a waffle! light, chewy and yummy – it was SO worth the wait!

i got the liège wafel with belgium chocolate fudge and confectioners sugar. according to wikipedia, the liège wafel was invented by the chef of the prince-bishop of Liège (eastern Belgium) in the 18th century as an adaptation of brioche bread dough – another of my favorite breads! it features chunks of pearl sugar, which caramelizes on the outside of the waffle when baked. It is the most common type of waffle available in Belgium and is prepared in plain, vanilla and cinnamon varieties by street vendors across the nation.

Wafels & Dinges has five kinds of sweet waffles and two kinds of savory waffles. the sweet ones have a variety of choices of toppings or “dinges.” Wafels & Dinges’ prized dinge is the spekuloos spread. i ca’t wait to try it … with another waffle … SOON!

cake & shake

gf, her hubs and i went to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit: Savage Beauty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (from may 4 thru july 31) and it was spectacular! afterwards, gf & i looked for some treats. right outside the MET were a couple of food trucks. i love checking out mobile trucks so we stopped at the Cake & Shake truck.

cupcakes, cakes and shakes. sounds decadent. but to feel better about treating yourself, cake & shake uses organic milk, eggs, flour, sugar and butter in the cakes. the milkshakes use real fruit and organic fruit flavoring. in addition, the packaging uses recycled paper or plastics that are biodegradable, recyclable or compostable. cool.

the cakes have fun names and are topped with frosting. some cakes have a mousse center. unique to other cakes, the MET location also has savory cakes with sausage, turkey, risotto, rice and/or cheese. the first time i went to the Alexander McQueen exhibit w my gf, i was in the mood for chocolate so i got the cup o’ joe cupcake – chocolate cake, dark chocolate mousse, chocolate mocha butter cream and bittersweet chocolate shavings. YUM!

a few weeks later, i took my relatives visiting to see the McQueen exhibit. afterwards, i checked out the drinks. there are standard coffee, tea and cocoa … then there are shakes, with fun flavors as haitian mango, huckleberry and salted caramel. i got to two of them: white peach and haitian mango, and we shared. they are so flavorful and refreshing!

i do plan to go back to the MET to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit at least one more time so i can’t to try something else at this cart!

meal on the go via AMTRAK

i’ve taken short rides on the amtrak before – one hour to three hours maximum. but this trip was the first ride that was longer than a few hours – not just a few hours longer but overnight! 21 hours long to be exact en route to florida!

now one of the fun things about taking a long ride on a train is the dining car. there’s something about sitting in a train, looking out at the green scenery, while having food served to you, that is a one-of-a-kind experience. meals are prepped for you to order in tiny tiny quarters. the dining car is filled only with tables, with seating for 4. if you’re a party of 1 or 2, you sit on one side of the table or next to each other. then you site with another party of 1 or 2 across from you. this is also what makes the taking train / dining experience unique because you get to meet new people. m & i met a lady from florida who’s dealing with real estate issues, a mother and son who moved to boston from the bronx and has no regrets, and a grandmother who has homes in ny and florida and loves to joke around! it was so much fun meeting new people!

food was tasty, service was nice, and the scenery was beautiful. what a fun way to enjoy a good meal and get where one needs to go. we arrived in florida as well as returned home, safe and sound!

holly cow, molly moon’s

while walking around downtown seattle, i had a hankering for ice cream but i could not find a parlor anywhere! so, aside from a ice cream shake at johnny rockets or milk shakes at mcdonalds, there was no ice cream! do people in seattle eat ice cream???

so, i asked cola man what was the deal and where is the ice cream? and that’s how i learned about molly moon’s homemade ice cream, a cute parlor in freemont. now, the first day cola man drove by there, it was a weekend night and it was late but there was a line out the door. apparently it is a frequent occurrence – lines out the door for a scoop of ice cream. now that’s my kind of city! so we tried another day and we were successful! i had the ginger ice cream. it was creamy and gingery with little bits of crystalized ginger. yum!

now if you really wanted to know, the place is named after the owner, molly moon and the dog on the logo is her dog, parker posey. the names are just made for a bio for an ice cream parlor! you can also find the Molly Moon mobile driving around in the city for your ice cream needs.

little cupcake lover cart

i was in the village shopping and passed by a cart stationed on broadway between houston and bleecker selling cupcakes.

called little cupcake lover, they sell mini bite-size cupcakes and standard size cupcakes:

  • little cupcakes come in the following flavors:

vanilla, red velvet, mint chocolate, black & white swirl, oreo, chocolate peanut butter, strawberry, peanut butter & jelly, nutella mint and chocolate

while

  • large cupcakes come in the following flavors:

chocolate sprinkled,  lemon sprinkled, rainbow sprinkled, spring sprinkled, red velvet, ocean sprinkled and violet sprinkled

i wanted a nutella mint cupcake but they had sold out so i settled for the little mint chocolate cupcake. the mint frosting was light and fluffy while the cupcake was moist and chocolatey – yum yum yum!

if i hadn’t just eaten lunch, i definitely would have gotten a lot more! so i’ll just have to find another excuse to go shopping and meet up with my little cupcake lover!

tacos on wheels

if you have memories of running after the jingle of the ice cream truck when you were a kid (or adult), imagine how much exercise you would have gotten if there were all other kinds of good food rolling your way.

food trucks are a growing industry in recent years! the first one i searched for was the belgian waffle truck. i learned that wafles & dinges keeps moving from location to location, day by day, so i have yet to find to try it — but i will one day! last month, i watched throwdown with bobby flay where bobby accepted a chocolate bread pudding challenge by the dessert truck in nyc. yesterday, i was watching abc news and saw a food segment about the taco truck. touting creative healthy authentic mexican food, taco truck cooks and serves food from a truck parked at a location with a great view. from either the hoboken or jersey city locations, it looks out into the nyc skyline.

but the taco truck isn’t only about good food or a great view, it’s also about health and environment. taco truck’s website has a section on food > health that explains how the ingredients in their recipes are good for you as well as how it is good for you. they use fresh, organic, local and all-natural ingredients. they serve with recyclable or biodegradable packaging and have a recycling and composting program. their truck is equipped with energy and water efficient appliances, and it runs on a propane generator. i don’t make it to jersey often but this certainly is a tasty and eco-friendly reason to do so!

crêpes à la banane et nutella

although one of the best dinners m & i had in paris was belgian, that didn’t mean we didn’t have any french favorites! oui! oui! and oooh la la … we did!

m & i stayed at a hotel a few blocks from rue cler, a street well known for its markets, restaurants and stores. it was on that street that m & i had our first crepe: crêpes à la banane et nutella. the crepe man spread nutella on one half of a large paper thin crepe, piled on the sliced bananas, then folded the crepe over twice forming a quarter circle and finally put the filled and folded crepe inside a paper wrap for you to hold as you eat. it was divine!

crepes in paris, however, weren’t just sweet. there were savory crepes as well as sweet and savory crepes. yes, they make ‘em all. on the day we went to the versailles, m & i went a crepe restaurant a few blocks away. i had a spinach crepe and it was awesome! on our last day in paris, m returned to the crepe stand on rue cler and ordered the first crepe we had. he wanted crêpes à la banane et nutella to be the last taste he had in paris. crepes – très magnifique!

oh waffle stand, where art thou?

when m & i went to paris, one of our best meals wasn’t french – it was belgium! along the famous Champs Elysees was this restaurant: léon de bruxelles. when you think belgium food, you think mussels and fries. this place does not disappoint! while you eat, you watch a video on how the restaurant catches mussels and cook each individual pot. the quality and the flavor of the mussels show they are made with expertise. the entrée comes with pommes frites (french fries) and they are bottomless. did we ask for more, you ask? silly question, of course we did! YUMMEEE!

so, with such an amazing meal, how does one fit dessert? you jiggle around and make room! thank goodness we did! these belgium waffles are TO DIE FOR — but you don’t want to die because you want to keep living so you can go back for more! the amazingly light waffles with a sprinkle of confectioners sugar and a little a metal container of dark chocolate … as stuffed as we were, we ate the whole waffle and did NOT regret it!

unfortunately, this trip was a year ago and while i can find really good mussels, i have yet to find a REALLY good belgium waffle place in the states. i have heard that there is a waffle stand that sells awesome belgium waffles in the streets of new york. i once passed by it after finishing a hearty meal but now, with an empty stomach and craving mouth, i have no recollection where it is. does any one know and is it worth the find? let me know!
